There is a great variation in proficiency level and academic needs to the ESL students. Some of the ESOL students are current refugees and immigrants, taken to the United States by their families searching for refuge from persecution, political repression or by families looking for econo mic opportunities like business activities. Other students have acquired limited formal schooling. Some students are members of ethno linguistic clusters that have stayed on the continent for generations, some more extensively than the United States has existed as a nation. Some of the students have had former education, including accuracy in their nature languages. The primarily concern is with the students in basic and secondary schools who are non-native speakers of English and who are referred to as ESOL learners and students. There have been standards set to describe and specify the language competencies ESOL students in secondary and preliminary schools so as to become fully proficient in English, to have unrestricted admission to grade-appropriate directions in challenging educational subjects, and decisively to lead rich and prolific lives. The establishment of the standards has been by the effort of other national standard set of groups especially by the foreign language standards and English language arts. The total three language standards schemes share an emphasis on the essence of: assessment that respects cultural and language diversity, the role of ESOL learners native language in their general learning development and English language, cognitive, cultural and social processes in academic development and language, language as communication, the societal and individual value of both bi-and multilingualism and also language learning through significance and meaningful use (Braine 1990, pg 121). For TESOL research to be effective for second learning, its standards have seemed not to work alone. In turn, other professional organizations and firms have devised world-class standards which are developmentally appropriate and useful. These standards provide high levels of success in content education for all scholars, including the ESOL students. But the substance standards do not provide the educators with the strategies and directi ons they need to help ESOL learners to get these standards because they have an assumptions that, students ability and understanding English to engage with the content. Most of the substance standards do not recognize the central role of language in the content achievement. Nor do they emphasize the styles of learning and particular assessment and instructional requirements of students who are still developing ability in ability in English. In summary, the substance standards do not add English to the personal home languages, SOESL standards are high required in TESOL learning. The ESL standards have recognized that besides school entry, the students should acquire extra culture and language and learn the competencies in English that are characteristics of English native speakers at the same age and that are basic to the full English language skills attainment and other content standards. The ESL principals articulate developmental English language requirements of ESOL st udents and highest special assessments and instructional considerations that must be provided to ESOL students if they are to gain from and get the high principles proposed for other matters. Therefore, the ESL principles are vital because they; emphasize the main role of language in attaining of other principles, emphasize on the English language development requirements of ESOL students, and also ensure provision of directions to tutors on how to meet the requirements of ESOL learners (Harkla 1999, pg 93). Several myths have been associated with the second language learning which prevail both among several educational professionals, several lay persons and policy makers. It is perceived that ESOL students learn English quickly and easily due to being exposed to and enclosed by native English speakers. The fact of this matter is that it takes more time for an individual to learn the second language. It also involves a quite significant effort on the part of the studen t. It is hard work to learn the second language because even the youngest students do not just simply pick up the language. It is also perceived that when ESOL students can be able to communicate comfortably in English, they have proficiently developed in English language. The fact of this is that it can take a student for ESOL around 6-9 years to attain the same level of proficiency in learning English as a native speaker. More so the ESOL student taking part in thoughtfully designed programs of sheltered or bilingual content direction remain in school longer and achieve significantly higher academic rates as compared to learners without such advantages. Majority of the people also perceive that, in earlier periods, refuge children learned English rapidly and assimilated quicker in to American life. Contrary to that, most of the refuge students in the early part of this century did not easily learn English quickly or well. Most of them dropped out of education to work in s ectors that did need the type of academic attainment and communication skills that substantive career opportunities need today. Consequently, TESOL came up with a vision of effective learning for all students. The purpose of ESL principal can only be fully recognized in the wider context of learning for ESOL students. Therefore, before presentation of the ESL principles, it is of great importance to outline and explain the over arching vision of effective learning. Some of the TESOLs vision include: the knowledge of over one culture and language which is of advantageous for all learners, the effective learning also needs comprehensive provision of the first rate services and full acquisition to the services by all learners (Braine 2005, pg 88). All educational personnel should have an assumption of responsibility for the learning of ESOL learners. At the same time, effective education for ESOL learning comprises of native like levels of ability in English. Last but not t he least the effective learning for ESOL students should include the promotion and maintenance of ESOL learners native language in community and school context. Effective learning for ESOL students includes native like stages of proficiency in English. For ESOL learners to be successful in a learning institution and ultimately outside school, they must be in a position to utilize English to accomplish their personal, educational and social goals with the similar proficiency as English native speakers. In school, the ESOL students require to be able to both write and read English so as to demonstrate their learning and achieve academic content. ESOL students also require to be in a position to follow routine classroom directives provided in English and recognize and utilize appropriate communication models so as to become successful learners in the academic environment. Lastly, ESOL students require using English to have effective function in social settings when outside the school and also in academic performance and assessment principals that differentiate between academic and language achievement are also needed if ESOL learners are to be granted full credit for learning academic content as they acquire English (Braine 2005, pg 114). For effective learning of ESOL, there should be promotion and maintenance of ESOL students native languages in both community and school contexts. Through definition, the ESOL students already know and utilize other languages. Both the school completion and academic achievement for ESOL learners is enhanced significantly especially when they are able to use their native language facilitates development of the second language. The development and use of ESOL learners native language also serves United States national interests since it increases the cultural and linguistic cultural available as the US competes globally in economy. The achievement of challenging world class educational principles by learn ers is only possible if all the schools prepare their educational missions with ESOL students as well as others in mind. For comprehensive learning, there should be sharing of responsibilities by and collaboration among all educational professionals working with the ESOL learners (Helbert 1976, pg 155). My Country, Right or Wrong! Who Said This

The  phrase, My Country, Right or Wrong! may seem like a rambling of a drunk soldier, but this phrase has an interesting history behind it.   Stephan Decatur: Was He the Original Creator of This Phrase? The story goes back to the early 19th century when a US naval officer and commodore Stephan Decatur was gaining immense admiration and accolades for his naval expeditions and adventures. Decatur was famous for his daredevil acts of valor, especially for the burning of the frigate USS Philadelphia, which was in the hands of pirates from the Barbary states. Having captured the ship with just a handful of men, Decatur set the ship on fire and came back victorious without losing a single man in his army. British Admiral Horatio Nelson remarked that this expedition was one of the boldest  and daring acts of the age. Decatur’s exploits continued further. In April 1816, after his successful mission of signing of the peace treaty with Algeria, Stephan Decatur was welcomed home as a hero. He was honored at a banquet, where he raised his glass for a toast and said: â€Å"Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong!† This toast went on to become one of the most famous lines in history. The sheer patriotism, the blind love for motherland, the egotist zeal of a soldier makes this line a great jingoistic punchline. While this statement has always been contested for its highly narcissistic undertones, you cannot but help the prevailing sense of patriotism that is the hallmark of a great soldier. Edmund Burke: The Inspiration Behind the Phrase One cannot say for sure, but perhaps Stephan Decatur was greatly influenced by Edmund Burke’s writing. In 1790, Edmund Burke had written a book titled Reflections on the Revolution in France, in which he said, â€Å"To make us love our country, our country ought to be lovely.† Now, we need to understand the social conditions prevailing during Edmund Burke’s time. At this point in time, the French Revolution was in full swing. The 18th-century philosopher believed that along with the fall of the French monarchy, there was also a fall of good manners. People had forgotten how to be polite, kind and compassionate, which led to depravity during the French Revolution. In this context, he lamented that the country needs to be lovable, in order for the people to love their own country. Carl Schurz: The US Senator With a Gift of the Gab Five decades later, in 1871 a US senator Carl Schurz used the phrase â€Å"right or wrong† in one of his famous speeches. Not in the exact same words, but the meaning conveyed was quite similar to that of Decatur’s. Senator Carl Schurz gave a fitting reply to a haranguing Senator Mathew Carpenter, who used the phrase, â€Å"My country, right or wrong† to prove his point. In reply, Senator Shurz said, â€Å"My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.† Carl Schurzs speech was received with a deafening applause from the gallery, and this speech established Carl Schurz as one of the foremost and distinguished orators of the Senate. Why the Phrase My Country Right or Wrong! May Not Be So Right for You The phrase, â€Å"My country right or wrong† has become one of the greatest quotes in American history. It has the ability to fill your heart with patriotic fervor. However, some linguistic experts believe that this phrase could be a bit too potent for an immature patriot. It could foster an imbalanced view of one’s own nation. Misplaced patriotic fervor could sow the seed for self-righteous rebellion or war. In 1901, British author G. K. Chesterton wrote in his book The Defendant: â€Å"My country, right or wrong is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying My mother, drunk or sober.† He goes on to explain his view: â€Å"No doubt if a decent mans mother took to drink he would share her troubles to the last; but to talk as if he would be in a state of gay indifference as to whether his mother took to drink or not is certainly not the language of men who know the great mystery.† Chesterton, through the analogy of the ‘drunk mother’, was pointing out to the fact that blind patriotism is not patriotism. Jingoism can only bring about the downfall of the nation, just like false pride brings us to a fall. English novelist Patrick OBrian wrote in his novel Master and Commander: â€Å"But you know as well as I, patriotism is a word; and one that generally comes to mean either my country, right or wrong, which is infamous, or my country is always right, which is imbecile.† How to Use This Famous Quote, My Country Right or Wrong! In the world we live today, with growing intolerance and terror breeding in every dark alley, one has to tread carefully before using jingoistic phrases purely for rhetoric. While patriotism is a desirable quality in every respectable citizen, we must not forget that the first duty of every global citizen is to set right what is wrong in our country. If you choose to use this phrase to pepper your speech or talk, use it diligently. Make sure to spark the right kind of patriotic fervor in your audience and help to bring about change in your own country.

Proactive change involves actively attempting to make alterations to the work place and its practices. Companies that take a proactive approach to change are often trying to avoid a potential future threat or to capitalize on a potential future opportunity. Reactive change occurs when an organization makes changes in its practices after some threat or opportunity has already occurred in the external environment. As an example of the difference, assume that a hotel executive learns about the increase in the number of Malaysians who want to travel with their pets. The hotel executive creates a plan to reserve certain rooms in many hotel locations for travelers with pets and to advertise this new amenity, even before travelers begin asking about such accommodations. This would be a proactive response to change because it was made in anticipation of customer demand. In Walter de la Mare’s â€Å"An Ideal Craftsman† the main theme is evil in unexpected places. The story shows that evil can be found in anyone, that anyone can commit acts that are wrong even those that we consider to be pure and incapable of wrong acts and sin. â€Å"An Ideal Craftsman† tells the story of a murder. A young boy sets off on an adventure in the middle of the night. He is awoken by a noise and sets off to the kitchen to commit a raid on Jacob. The title of the story takes on a whole new meaning once you have read the story. De la Mare uses a play on the word â€Å"craftsman†. The little boy is the ‘craftsman’ of the story. He orchestrates how the murder of Jacobs should be covered up to make it look as though he had committed suicide. The title is ironic. One of the reoccurring animal references through the story is the one to a crow. Crows are often used as the symbol of death; they are considered a bad omen. It was once believed that witches and sorcerers used the foot of a crow when casting death spells. Another animal reference that reoccurred throughout the story is how the little boy keeps referencing to himself as a ferret and ferret like. Ferrets are members of the weasel family. Implying that the little boy is sneaky and conniving. There is a quality of the young boy that shows his innocence up until the point he meets the woman who was Jacob’s lover in the kitchen and he realizes she has just murdered Jacob. The little boy makes the statement that â€Å"Jacobs was just the kind of person you’d expect to be a murderer. Not this woman, so fat and stupid (pg. 14)†, again this shows that bad deeds can come from unexpected places. Just as the young boy can’t imagine this woman being a murderer, one would also not expect a boy of his age to have the mind that this is something that she must cover up, let alone have a plan as to how she would be able to do so. Just as the woman asks the little boy for help, â€Å"Where’s the gate? Where’s the gate, I say? I got lost there among them bushes. I can’t get out. D’ye see? I’ve lost the gate. It’s dark. It’s come on raining. Where’s the gate? (pg. 211)† The use of light in the story is an important symbol used by de la Mare. It is almost a separate character in the story as de la Mare describes wickedness through the dark imagery of the story. After careful reading, and re-reading, I failed to understand his position How can he perceive that by terminating a human life, this is acceptable moral behavior? Moral implies conformity to established codes or accepted notions of right and wrong. In other words, the basic moral values of society. Since when did society begin to accept that termination of life due to a dysfunction or deformity When did society decide that it is their "moral" obligation to determine when the "quality of death" supersedes the "quality of life"? Who are they to decide what the quality of life should be for that individual? Morality is a standard of right behavior, sanctioned by ones conscience and ethical judgment. How can any one person in society, using ethical judgment, decide when the life of a child is no longer of importance? McLaughlin refers to the killing ( word he used in his essay ), of person who no longer has the capacity to exist within the quality of life standards. Who set those standards? Society? When society decides who is fit to live and who is not, this is manifesting themselves as "God". This is morally unacceptable to me. We were not put upon this Earth to act as God. We were placed here to do his work, but that does not give us the free will to decide who lives and who dies. That is not our decision to make. I , for one, do not want to have to supply an answer as to why I felt that a disabled or dysfunctional person was not deemed acceptable to society. My question still remains as to who takes the responsibility of determining who deserves to live and die, based on "quality of life" W ...
